What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is foot massage, and falls into the realm of ‘Complimentary Medicine’ It is a holistic healing therapy that aims to treat the individual, inducing a state of balance and harmony in body, mind and spirit.

The Aims of Reflexology

The aim of Reflexology is to trigger the return of homeostasis – a state of equilibrium or balance.  Professional massage on the feet can establish which parts of the body are out of balance and therefore, not working efficiently.  Treatment can then be given to correct these imbalances and return the body to good working order.

About Your Treatment

Your initial visit will last for one and a half hours, and will include an in-depth consultation to establish medical history and to determine present problems.  Subsequent visits for treatment will last for 45 – 60 minutes.  The cost of the initial consultation will be included in your first treatment fee.

Reflexology in History

Reflexology has been practiced for many centuries.  Exactly where it originated is not clear but the main school of thought is that it began in the East.

In 1917 Dr’s William Fitzgerald and Edwin Bowers were generally acknowledged as the forefathers of modern Reflexology.  Dr Fitzgerald discovered that pressure on the hands and feet produced pain relief in distant parts of the body, and the condition causing the pain was also relieved.  His student: Eunice Igham published two books on her methods of Reflexology in 1938 as did Renee Tanner in 1973.  Their methods are being taught in colleges today.

Reflexologists Don’t

Reflexologists do not practice medicine.  Never diagnose a disease, treat for a specific condition, prescribe or adjust medication.

Reflexologists do not treat specific diseases.

However, they can help eliminate problems caused by specific diseases by bringing the body back into a state of balance.

Tender reflexes indicate which parts of the body are congested.  This ‘diagnosis’ only related to parts of the body that are considered ‘out of balance’ and not specific named disorders.
